July 2004
The chemical industry is the most innovative branch in Germany

This is the result of the annual innovation report of the Centre for European Economic Research (www.zew.de). 82 per cent of the chemical enterprises have introduced new products and processes in 2002 and 10.5 billion € have been spent for innovation activities. For the year 2004 the chemical enterprises expect innovation expenditures of 11.5 billion €. Besides the above average share of chemical enterprises with new products on the market (38 per cent) the chemical industry is also characterised by rationalisation success based on process innovation. This strategy has lead to a reduction of cost by 6,3 per cent.

You can download the complete study (in German language) on the web site of the ZEW.

Furthermore, the ZEW has published an interesting study “Innovation Engine Chemistry”. This in-depth study looks at the implications of the innovation in the chemical sector to other industries.

Central German Future Conference in Halle, Saxony-Anhalt

The Central German Future Conference has been organised in Halle on the 24th of March 2004 to discuss the development of clusters in the area Central German, which unites the regions Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. Organised by the Regionenmarketing Mitteldeutschland, it is the objective of this initiative to strengthen the cooperation between the three regions and to create synergy effects for a sustainable growth. The discussions in the three main clusters automotive, chemical industry and biotechnology/life science have shown the progress of the work and the challenges for the future. Especially the cluster chemical industry is a positive example for an intense cooperation between administration, industry and science. A high participation of the chemical enterprises such as Dow Chemical, the cooperation of chemical sites in the “Central European Chemical Network” and the political support which is expressed in the “Strategy Dialogue Chemistry” in Saxony-Anhalt have supported the development of a highly modern and competitive chemical industry in central Germany. These experiences could be useful for the project as best-practice solutions for the other regions in the area of cluster development.
